The Incident

A wiped film apparatus which had been filled with DMF for cleaning purposes came apart releasing DMF into the fume cupboard and laboratory floor.

The Investigation

The receving flasks were very small (to close up the port), and were only lightly supported.  However when the apparatus was full of solvent then the weight of solvnet contained was considerable.

Conclusions

The apparatus came apart because of the large volume of solvent contained.

Lessons Learnt

The support for the flasks should have been sensible for the amount of solvent, not for the size of the flask.
