The IncidentTwo containers of acetic acid got hot and developed pressure. One of these burst and spread its contents onto the laboratory floor.
The acetic acid was recovered material from a reaction that had used acetic anhydride
- The incident was attributed to in-complete destruction of acetic anhydride.
- Once the reaction accelerated, then the containers pressurized
The reaction between water and acetic anhydride can be rather slow, but once it gets underway, then a rapid temperature (& pressure) can develop.
